The girl went off the piste on the valley descent and crashed into a tree. She lost her balance in a driving error and went off the track, police said. She was flown to the Innsbruck clinic with the rescue helicopter. There she succumbed to her severe injuries.
The descent of a Russian snowboarder who was unfamiliar with the area in St. Leonhard im Pitztal in the Pitztal Glacier ski area had a happier ending. He drove down a closed, unprepared off-piste run and was surprised by the darkness. When he did not arrive at the meeting point agreed with his companion at around 6:15 p.m., the woman made an emergency call. After a search operation involving the Innerpitztal mountain rescue service, employees of the Pitztaler Gletscherbahn and the alpine police, the man was rescued around 9:15 p.m. unharmed.
