Not working was out of the question for the electrician. That’s why the 61-year-old applied to the garbage disposal of the municipal building yard. The friendly Ukrainian wanted to start work the day after the interview and stood in front of the building yard in work clothes.
Mayor Peter Schobesberger (SPÖ) had campaigned for Shevchenko’s appointment. “I admire the zeal of this man,” he says. “One of our building yard employees speaks perfect Russian and acts as an interpreter until Yurii has learned German. The entire building yard team immediately welcomed our new employee in a friendly manner.”
Yurii Shevchenko worked in the middle of the war zone, just six kilometers from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. His wife also didn’t want to sit around doing nothing and has meanwhile found a job at the Vöcklabruck hospital. “The fact that Yurii and his wife can work and live with us in safety is like a Christmas miracle for both of them,” says the mayor.
