If you see old age positively, you live better – and often longer

Those who have a positive image of aging will feel better in later years and often age healthier. Studies show that. “Because what you expect in old age seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy,” explains Jana Nikitin, Professor of the Psychology of Aging at the University of Vienna on orf.at.

The problem is that the image of aging is often very negative: “Age is associated with frailty, with loneliness or mental deterioration,” explains the psychologist. As you get older, this picture begins to “work”. If you are no longer as fit, you put it down to age and not to the fact that you might not be moving enough. “It’s a vicious circle,” says Jana Nikitin. Because instead of starting with sports, you become more and more similar to the negative image you have of aging. The good news: You can get rid of the negative expectations – by strengthening positive images. For example, through the idea that one remains socially integrated and physically and mentally active.
