50 breeding pairs: The white-tailed eagle feels at home in Austria again

The red list of endangered species maintained by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is longer than ever this year: around 41,500 of the 147,500 recorded animal and plant species worldwide are classified as threatened. The populations of the wild animals observed have collapsed by 69 percent compared to the 1970s.

At the turn of the year, the WWF Austria took stock of the past year, in which not only negative things can be found: The environmental protection organization describes the white-tailed eagle in Austria as a prime example of species protection. While the heraldic animal of the Republic was still considered extinct in this country in 2000, there are now 50 breeding pairs.

According to the WWF, however, the otter in Austria is one of the losers of the year: this year, Salzburg issued an ordinance for the removal of 57 specimens, and Carinthia has extended a similar ordinance. According to the organization, the otter serves as a scapegoat for endangering fish stocks through construction, pollution and overuse of water bodies.

In view of the overall poor balance, Georg Scattolin from WWF Austria insists on an ambitious implementation of the agreement on the preservation of ecological diversity, which was decided in December at the World Conference on Nature in Montreal. Oh, the biodiversity strategy for Austria presented in December must be strictly adhered to. “The numbers speak for themselves, the plans are on the table. Now words must be followed by deeds,” says Scattolin.
