“That is why from this moment I hold the Civic Committee and Mr. Camacho responsible for everything that can happen to my family,” the minister concluded.

arrest and protests

Luis Fernando Camacho was arrested this Wednesday, in the midst of an extensive strike that the Santa Cruz region is carrying out against the government of Luis Arce. The leader is being investigated for his participation in the coup that overthrew Evo Morales in 2019 and forced him into exile in Mexico and Argentina.

Faced with this scenario, the main civil organizations in Santa Cruz, a prosperous agricultural region in eastern Bolivia, announced on Thursday a 24-hour work stoppage and a road blockade.

COMPLAINT. The moment of Luis Camacho’s arrest was recorded by his relatives. The governor of Santa Cruz was handcuffed and taken by helicopter by agents without identification.

The measures, which will begin early on Friday, are a new episode of the crisis that began in 2019 with the resignation of then-President Evo Morales and have as a background the desire for autonomy of the territory with respect to the national government, based in western La Paz.

“Departmental civic strike of 24 hours is declared starting at zero hours on Friday, December 30, 2022, demanding the immediate release of the governor of the department,” The Pro Santa Cruz Committee, which brings together these groups, said a resolution after an assembly.

In addition, he reported that he supports the decision of a provincial civic committee to block the roads that connect the region with the rest of the country, supposedly to prevent new “kidnappings” of citizens, leaders or authorities of the department.

Preventive prison

This Thursday, meanwhile, a prosecutor requested this Thursday six months of preventive detention for Camacho.

“The precautionary measure that [se] requested is preventive detention for a period of six months”to serve in the Chonchocoro maximum security prison, the prosecutor assigned to the case, Omar Mejillones, said at a press conference after Camacho’s arrest on Wednesday.

The Prosecutor’s Office explained that his arrest is due to the case opened against Camacho for his participation in the case called “coup d’état” against Morales (2006-2019).

A judge must resolve in the next few hours the temporary imprisonment of the opposition governor.
