Director says goodbye

At the end of the year, Volkhard Maier bids farewell to the Kalkalpen National Park after five years as director. “The release of lynx Norik on December 10 was one of the highlights of my work,” says Maier. Under his leadership, the national park has come a good deal closer to the requirement of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to give priority to natural processes on three quarters of the area: “Together with my team and the federal forests, we have the share in Austria last great forest wilderness increased from 50 to around 70 percent.” According to the IUCN, in addition to species protection and the preservation of genetic diversity, “recreation and tourism” have top priority. His experience in combining nature conservation and tourism was therefore in great demand in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region. “Since the opening of the information office in Windischgarsten, tourism and the national park in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region have been pulling together.”

Another important impetus is the expansion of the ecological stepping stones between the three protected areas of the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area, the Gesäuse National Park and the Kalkalpen National Park, which is about to be signed. In addition, a milestone was achieved with the completion of the first management plan.
