As things currently stand, 2022 will most likely be the third warmest year in the history of measurements – a circumstance that also left its mark on the glaciers of the Dachstein massif. The warming of the Hallstatt Glacier caused the most extensive loss of mass since the start of the Upper Austrian measurement program in 2006. This year alone, the largest glacier in the northern Limestone Alps has lost six percent of its volume. Alexander Ohms, climate expert at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, sees the reasons for this in a lack of snowfall in spring, a very early start of ice melting and persistently high temperatures in summer.
