According to judicial circles, a court found her guilty of five counts alone in a corruption trial. Suu Kyi, who had already been sentenced to 26 years in prison in previous trials, now faces a further seven years behind bars.
The trial concerned the loan of a government helicopter to a member of the government. Suu Kyi is accused of not following rules and causing “damage to the state”. Each of these offenses carries a penalty of up to 15 years.
The military overthrew the elected government of Suu Kyi in Myanmar in February 2021 and took power. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has since been found guilty of 14 charges ranging from corruption to illegally importing walkie-talkies to breaching the Official Secrets Act.
