In Austria, the air quality is increasing continuously for the most part, and the preliminary balance sheet of the Federal Environment Agency shows that in 2022, for example, particulate matter (PM10) will be one of the lowest levels since measurements began in 2000, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) one of the lowest levels since 1990. Ozone (O3 ) the values were above those of previous years.
Along with global warming, air pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems. The main factors for lower air pollution include a further decline in so-called NOx emissions from road traffic and the relatively mild weather, according to a broadcast by the Federal Environment Agency on Friday. Despite the long-term positive development of air quality, the current WHO guideline values are still being exceeded on a large scale in Austria.
For ozone (O3) there is a negative development for 2022, since the information threshold was exceeded on six days at ten measuring points in Carinthia, Lower Austria and Vienna, in 2021 on one day at two measuring points, in 2020 on one day and one measuring point. Eight-hour mean values of more than 120 μg/m3 were registered at 33 measuring points on more than 25 days – in the two previous years there were between three and five measuring points.
High fine dust pollution in Styria
In the case of fine dust for fine dust particles with a diameter of less than ten micrometers, according to the preliminary data, the limit value criterion according to the Air Pollution Control Act (I-GL) for PM10 (more than 25 daily average values over 50 μg/m3 per calendar year) was not exceeded at any measuring point, the same applies – As in previous years – for the EU Air Quality Directive (more than 35 daily mean values over 50 μg/m3 per calendar year) for PM10, the annual mean values for particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) were below the level in most federal states according to the preliminary data of the years up to 2018, reported the Federal Environment Agency.
Most PM10 daily mean values above 50 μg/m3 are shown in the provisional particulate matter balance up to December 30, 2022 at the measuring points Feldkirch Bärenkreuzung, Judendorf Süd and Graz Don Bosco. In Feldkirch, large contributions were made by construction activities.
In the case of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which mainly comes from traffic and is particularly responsible for diesel-powered vehicles, the 2022 level was slightly lower than that of 2021 and thus continues the downward trend of the past 15 years, which is reflected in the renewal of the vehicle fleet. In 2022, as in the two previous years, the preliminary NO2 annual mean values do not show the EU limit value of 40 μg/m3 being exceeded, however, the national limit value according to IG-L of 30 μg/m3 (annual mean value) was exceeded at four measuring points in Linz, Salzburg, Graz and Tyrol just exceeded. A detailed analysis of the air quality data will be available in autumn 2023 in the annual report on air quality in Austria.
