Up to eight degrees: Toast the new year outdoors

Toast the New Year outside at midnight, marvel at fireworks and dance the Blue Danube Waltz in three-four time without falling on your face on black ice or having to wear a thick winter coat: all of this is possible today, weather-wise.

The nightly temperatures in Upper Austria are said to be between four and eight degrees plus around the turn of the year. A record could even be broken during the day. The warmest December 31st ever measured in Upper Austria was in 2006 in Mondsee with 15.4 degrees. Today, a maximum temperature of up to 16 degrees is possible, says meteorologist Michael Butschek from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG, from Sunday GeoSphere Austria).

New Year’s Eve begins overcast, rain is also possible in the Mühlviertel. But as the day progressed, the weather cleared up and the sun made its way from the south and west.

Responsible is a large-scale south-west current over Central Europe, which shovels mild Atlantic air from Spain to us. In the Salzkammergut and in the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen, brisk foehn winds blow at up to 40 km/h. There is also no snow line in Upper Austria. Because of the foehn, two-digit plus degrees can be expected on the Feuerkogel (1592 meters) in the Höllengebirge and on the Krippenstein (2108 meters).

Tomorrow’s New Year’s Day will be friendly with temperatures of nine to 15 degrees after the early fog patches have cleared. Especially in the Mühlviertel and in the Salzkammergut the sun shines unclouded.

The weather conditions will continue on Monday. But while it is sunny in the Mühlviertel and in the southern highlands, persistent foggy areas persist in the central area and along the Danube.

A cold front won’t come until Tuesday. “But that won’t be the onset of winter either,” Butschek suspects. Some precipitation will fall, the snow line should be 1100 to 1200 meters.

GeoSphere Austria

The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), founded in 1851, and the Federal Geological Institute merged on January 1 to form the new “GeoSphere Austria”. The staff will be taken over. The merger is intended to create an international research facility that collects important data on climate change and disaster protection.
