“It’s not a good plan to wait for electricity and gas prices to drop,” says Martin Hagleitner, managing director of Austria Email, which manufactures hot water and heating systems. But there are simple and efficient ways for every household to reduce heating costs and save energy.
You can achieve an immediate effect by not overheating rooms, says Hagleitner. Two degrees less save up to twelve percent heating energy. 16 degrees is sufficient for rooms that are rarely used, and 18 degrees in bedrooms. It is also important to bleed and clean radiators regularly, because dust reduces the heating output.
Regular airing for around five minutes, three times a day, is also recommended. Blinds and shutters should be closed at night, and additional heating such as radiant heaters should be avoided.
