Petrol and motorways are becoming more expensive in Italy

They had benefited over the past nine months from the consumption tax cuts decided in March by the Draghi government and then partially confirmed by the Meloni government. Since the excise tax cut will not be extended in the new year, there will be an automatic increase in gasoline prices.

For both petrol and diesel, the reduction in the past few months has totaled 30.5 cents per liter. From the beginning of December it was reduced to 18.3 cents. According to the latest weekly surveys by the Ministry of the Environment, the national average price for green petrol is currently €1.625 per liter, its lowest level since June 2021. Diesel, on the other hand, was €1.689, its lowest level in almost a year.

The motorway toll in Italy is also increasing. At the beginning of each year, tariffs are traditionally updated, but for the past four years, after the collapse of Genoa’s Morandi Bridge that killed 43, they had been frozen. 2023 could see an increase again for the first time since 2018.

Motorway operators have submitted their applications for toll increases, which are currently being examined by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Economy, taking into account the investments made by the companies. The economic and financial plans of the various operators are on the table, but they are currently at various stages of approval.

The largest motorway company in Italy “Autostrade per l’Italia” (ASPI) has applied for an increase of two percent, the other operators higher percentages. On average, the tariff increases proposed by the motorway operators are much lower than those already granted in other European countries with similar concession and regulatory systems, such as France, where the increase is 4.7 percent, and Spain, with a plus of 4 percent , announced the Association of Motorway Operators Aiscat.
