New Year’s Eve like before Corona: metropolises started the new year loudly

Sydney, Australia, was one of the first major cities to ring in the new year with gigantic fireworks. In Berlin, Paris and London, crowds celebrated again on the streets.

In Germany rockets and firecrackers were allowed to be fired again for the first time in two years this year on New Year’s Eve. A big New Year’s Eve party with an audience took place at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin – albeit on a smaller scale than usual. The Berlin organizers voluntarily decided against the traditional high-altitude fireworks. The Berlin police announced that the return of pyrotechnics had led to significantly more operations throughout the city than in previous years.

In Paris a million people crowded the Champs-Élysées. French officials spoke of a “normal” rush, comparable to 2018 or 2019.

In London spectators were admitted to the official fireworks for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. In Madrid Thousands of people gathered in the Puerta del Sol square to listen to the twelve chimes that traditionally ring in the New Year there.

In Dubai was greeted in 2023 with fireworks atop the world’s tallest building, the 830-meter Burj Khalifa. A laser show added to the spectacle, throwing messages like “Hug again” at the landmark – a reference to the restrictions during the past pandemic years.

On the new Yorker For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, Times Square welcomed the new year in front of the usual large backdrop. On the famous square in Manhattan, tens of thousands of people celebrated with the traditional rain of confetti in mild temperatures. At midnight, as usual, a glowing crystal ball slid down a flagpole – the so-called Ball Drop. Otherwise, none of the New York New Year’s traditions were missing this year. The songs “Auld Lang Syne” and “New York, New York” echoed through the streets of the US metropolis. The Times Square party is one of the biggest New Year’s celebrations in the world. Last year, due to the pandemic, it was only celebrated with a quarter of the usual number of visitors. Millions of Americans follow the big show every year in front of the television – and this time saw a performance by singer Chelsea Cutler, among others.

Hundreds of thousands of people have fireworks and music in the Brazilian beach metropolis Rio de Janeiro welcome the new year. At midnight, a 12-minute fireworks display began, launched from ten rafts off Copacabana Beach. The organizers had previously expected around two million visitors. Numerous bands, musicians and DJs performed on numerous stages on Copacabana beach, but also in the Flamengo district, the Ilha do Governador in Guanabara Bay and in the Madureira district.

After the New Year’s Eve celebrations there had largely failed in the past two years due to the corona virus, claimed sydney this year, it reclaimed its self-chosen title of “New Year’s Capital of the World” and ignited a gigantic fireworks display on the famous Harbor Bridge. Crowds of people marveled at the approximately 100,000 rockets that drew pictures in the sky above the city. The organizers had previously expected a good one million viewers on site and another half million in front of the television. “It’s been a pretty good year for us, it’s great to have overcome the Corona crisis,” said 52-year-old David Hugh-Paterson, who had taken a seat in front of the Sydney Opera House.
