Even before the starting signal on the last day of 2022 at 3 p.m., the members of the TriRun Linz organization team, led by Peter Weinzierl, had a satisfied smile on their faces. After a two-year break, the Hypo New Year’s Run followed almost seamlessly from the time before the forced rest.
Almost 800 runners took part in the three-kilometre circuit with start and finish on the main square, ensuring a worthy sporting end to the year in downtown Linz, as Weinzierl put it.
At the 20th edition of the traditional event, in addition to top sporting performances, there was also a lot of fun for the participants in the last run of the year. The image was shaped by the costumed athletes, who made it clear that, in addition to the sporting aspect, running is always about the fun factor and that the New Year’s Eve run is also a fun run that gets the masses moving.
In any case, the main square was packed this year with many athletes of all ages. In addition, there were the many spectators along the route, who created a great atmosphere a few hours before the turn of the year. “It was a real folk festival,” said Weinzierl, who was particularly pleased that the forced break didn’t harm the popularity of the New Year’s Eve run.
Even though the focus for many of the participants was on enjoyment, being there and having fun with exercise, the New Year’s Eve run naturally had its sporting form of expression.
The title was defended in the main run over six kilometers, i.e. two laps through the city centre. As in 2019, when it was possible to run before Corona for the last time, Tina Fischl from the Bavarian WSV Otterskirchen won the victory in 20:42 minutes ahead of Edith Brandl from LC Neufurth and Iris Hermann (TriRun Linz).
In the men’s race, the winner came from the Mühlviertel: Philipp Obermüller from SU Bad Leonfelden was unbeatable in 18:27 minutes. He just relegated Dominik Uizani (LC Neufurth) and Matthias Hohlrieder (LAC Amateure Steyr) to second place.
