He fought his way to the finish in severe pain, where he came in tenth again, 4:06 minutes behind the day’s winner Mason Klein (KTM). It was initially unclear whether Walkner could continue the race.
For the 36-year-old, a visit to the doctor was first on the agenda. Walkner, in ninth place overall, has now opened up a gap of 8:18 minutes to the new leader Klein. The American took over the overall lead from compatriot Ricky Brabec (Honda), who lost more than five minutes and is now sixth.
Despite a two-minute time penalty, Klein booked his first stage win ahead of Germany’s Sebastian Bühler (Hero) and Skyler Howes (USA/Husqvarna). The Australian GasGas driver Daniel Sanders was in the lead for a long time, but like some other drivers he slowed down shortly before the finish line in order not to have to open the third stage on Tuesday as the winner of the day. Then the 669 km long route (447 km timed) to Ha’il is on the agenda.
