The emergency services went to the scene, near the sea world theme parkat 2:00 p.m. local time (0400 GMT), reported Gary WorrellQueensland Police Acting Inspector.
Worrell explained that the two aircraft crashed to the ground after the collision. “As a consequence of this, four people have lost their lives today.”
The Australian Bureau of Transport Safety said it had opened an investigation into the accident.
The other helicopter appeared to be largely intact at the scene of the crash, which is near the popular Sea World marine theme park, the AFP news agency reported.
“When they collided, they crashed and came to rest on the sandbank outside the Sea World complex,” said the acting inspector of the police service of Queensland, Gary Worrellin a press conference.
