The lessons from the “hot” New Year’s Eve in Wels

It was the busiest New Year’s Eve in a long time for the Wels fire department and police. The Wels firefighters had to complete 17 operations, including, as reported, willfully extinguishing garbage containers that had been set on fire and struggling with young people in the Noitzmühle in the Lichtenegg district, who continued to ignite firecrackers and fireworks in the immediate vicinity of the sites and endangered the helpers. In this district, the fire brigade had to respond to six fires within just half an hour, including a fire caused by a so-called Molotov cocktail and a fire on a balcony of an apartment building.

“Even onlookers made the extinguishing work difficult at times,” says Stefan Graziani from the Wels fire department. But he also praises the courageous efforts of local residents who tried to extinguish the burning garbage containers before the fire brigade arrived.

Safety officer Gerhard Kroiß (FP) shows absolutely no understanding for the fact that emergency services are being held up in their work. “It’s not at all possible for the firefighters to be hindered and endangered by fireworks, these gentlemen should think about how they would react if there was a fire in their apartment and the fire brigade could only get to the scene late.”

According to Kroiss, the increased readiness of the police on New Year’s Eve and the concentration of the security forces paid off. “Police were also deployed from abroad. The massive police and fire brigade deployment prevented further fires and damage to property.” In the case of arson, charges are filed against unknown persons, but the chance of catching the perpetrators is rather small. The police take tips.
