In the Salesian parish of Amstetten Herz-Jesu there was also much prayer for the deceased Pope Emeritus Benedict. Finally, there was a connection between the parish and the deceased head of the church, Joseph Ratzinger. The former, longtime top athlete pastor and “Olympic chaplain” Father Bernhard Maier well remembers an encounter with Benedict XVI. as part of a general audience for the Austrian national ski team in Rome.
Father Bernhard paid tribute to the deceased for his excellent theological texts, which “I always enjoy reading”. Pope Benedict has rendered many services to the connection between science and religion, the Father knows from the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco.
At the audience he gave to the athletes, the Pope from Bavaria “also showed himself to be an interested sports fan”, Father Bernhard Maier recalls.
