Problems with the emergency medical service

In an interview with the Welser Zeitung on Saturday, the spokeswoman for the resident doctors in Wels, Isabelle Natorski, explained why there are currently problems maintaining the general practitioner emergency service (HÄND). She said there were fewer and fewer doctors who could do this and that the HÄND system was theoretically structured in such a way that doctors from the hospital could also be used. “But that’s not wanted in the Wels hospital,” said Natorski. The OÖN asked the medical director of the Wels-Grieskirchen clinic, Thomas Muhr, for a statement.

Muhr says in advance that the cooperation with the resident doctors has worked very well so far. “Hospital doctors help out with staffing HÄND service bikes. Of course, the main task of hospital doctors must be to staff the service bikes in the hospital,” emphasizes Muhr.

Infection wave demands hospital

The Covid crisis and the current wave of infections with three pathogens (Covid/Influenza/RSV viruses) are a challenge for the hospitals, and additional service bikes have also been necessary in the clinic over the past two years. “Hospital doctors work three to six night shifts a month.”

The central emergency department recorded a double-digit increase in patients compared to the previous year. In the emergency room, patients are treated according to medical urgency, emergencies always have priority. “In order to be able to maintain the central emergency ambulance 24/7, we are very challenged and need the general practitioners and specialists working in the hospital. As the name HÄND suggests, it is a family doctor emergency service that is upstream of the clinic.” Health care is built up in stages. The first way is always to see your family doctor.

Muhr emphasizes that it is important that care in the private sector is also guaranteed in the future. Because only acute cases should be treated in the hospital so that the capacities in the hospital are sufficient and there are no unnecessary waiting times. The hospital also refers to the “Where am I right?” project. At www.wobinichricht.at there is a clear explanation of who should be contacted in which cases.
