As reported, the huts and rides at the Christmas market in the Volksgarten once again left clearly visible damage in the meadow. The responsible city councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) has now made a picture of the effects during a local inspection. Her verdict: “It is absolutely clear that things cannot go on like this and that the protection of the green space must be given priority.”

Dismantling of the Christmas market and more trouble in the Volksgarten
After the meadow had recovered well in the years when no Christmas markets could take place due to Corona, parts of it are now completely ruined again. “This has to stop,” said Schobesberger. How? On the one hand because the Christmas market has to adapt to the conditions of the Volksgarten, i.e. sales operations and rides have to be banned from the meadow. So huts and shops should only be set up on built-up areas. But the city councilor can also imagine that “it’s about time we reconsidered the Christmas markets at all”.
Conditions not met
Particularly annoying: According to Schobesberger, the conditions agreed when setting up the stands to protect the green area were not met, and some huts were moved up to one meter further into the meadow compared to previous markets. “This is unacceptable and must not be repeated under any circumstances.”
It would take up to two years for a broken meadow area to recover. The damage, which is now visible again, also shows that the fears from the point of view of nature conservation law have materialized. In the autumn, a statement by nature conservation stated: “If permanent lawns or meadows are built over for a long period of time, especially in the winter months, the lawn and meadow plants (grasses, herbs) die off permanently.”
