Construction industry effect: Slight increase in unemployment in the Freistadt district

The frosty temperatures at the beginning of December noticeably slowed down the labor market in the Freistadt district. Construction sites had to be shut down and employees fired earlier than usual. As a result, the unemployment rate in the Freistadt district rose to 3.7 percent.

“It is not unusual for the number of unemployed to increase more in December due to the large number of people employed in the construction and related trades,” says AMS Freistadt manager Alois Rudlstorfer. However, 498 of the 1138 jobseekers would have a re-employment commitment from their employer. According to Rudlstorfer, these would resume employment in their company after the winter and are therefore not actively looking for work. At the end of December, 640 people were actually looking for a new job. This is slightly less than in the same month last year. There are currently 646 job vacancies registered with the AMS from companies in the region.

The number of long-term unemployed is currently falling sharply. For people who have been looking for work for more than half a year, the decline is 27 percent. The decline is even greater at 41 percent for those who have not had a job for more than a year. This development is favored by various support programs of the AMS and the still high labor requirement of the companies in the district. In order to be able to fill vacancies, they are increasingly turning to applicants who would not have been shortlisted a few years ago. “We support companies that want to check whether a person fits into the company or has the appropriate knowledge with a work trial,” explains Freistadt’s AMS boss.

apprenticeship market

There are also significantly more vacancies for apprentices than are currently in demand. 256 vacancies for apprenticeships are currently registered with the AMS by Freistadt companies. On the other hand, there are 183 people looking for an apprenticeship – 162 of them are still in their last year of compulsory school, but are already looking for an apprenticeship starting in July 2023 all young people and their parents to first look at the apprenticeship places in the district before they consider moving towards the central area,” says Rudlstorfer.

Most vacancies for apprenticeships are currently in the tourism trades (60), metal and electrical trades (50), trade (47) and construction trades (38).
