On the phone, the callers pretend to be police officers or prosecutors and try to persuade the victims that their daughter or son caused a traffic accident. The arrest can only be avoided by paying bail. Then a crying voice is played in the background, reports the State Police Directorate.
Another tall tale is about a burglary in the immediate vicinity, in which the valuables of the person called would be in danger. The “wrong police officers” would then take over for security.
Tips on how to deal with phone scammers
- Neither the police nor the public prosecutor’s office asks for money over the phone, and there are no such security measures either
- Don’t let yourself be pressured
- Do not trust the caller – no matter who they say they are
- Don’t give the perpetrators a chance – end the conversation immediately
- Report the emergency call 133 the police
- Warn your older family members
