Colombia ordered to resume the military offensive against the ELN in the midst of peace negotiations

Differences with the ELN

Before the New Year, Petro had announced the Ceasefire so agreed bilateral with five armed groups illegal for six months. This agreement, in addition to the THE Nincluded a faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)to the criminal gangs of the gulf clan and the Self-defense groups of the Sierra Nevada.

But Tuesday The ELN denied having agreed to a ceasefire agreement with the Government and assured that a decree issued by the president it was just a proposal to be examined at the negotiating table.

“Given the desire for peace expressed by the ELN and while the bilateral cessation protocol is being studied at the dialogue table, we invite that organization to declare a verifiable truce in response to imperative call of the communities to maintain the bilateral cessation and non-violence in their territories,” explained the Minister of the Interior, Alfonso Pradaabout.

In addition, Prada clarified that while the bilateral cessation with the ELN is agreed at the negotiating table, the Military Forces and the National Police they will continue the offensive against that rebel group made up of some 2,400 combatants and considered as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

However, the Minister of the Interior clarified that bilateral cessation remains with the other four organizations with which dialogues will be initiated in which the respective protocols to move towards peace.
