Don’t rely on magic bullets when it comes to losing weight

“Purely plant-based”, “natural”, “medically tested”, “proven for centuries”: If you believe the advertising promises for slimming products, losing weight should be very easy. An unmanageable abundance of pills, drops, juices, powders or teas should make the annoying kilos disappear in a miraculous way within a very short time and without much effort. Those who are interested can find help on what to look out for when buying weight loss preparations and how you can actually lose weight in the new information brochure from the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor, “Slim through miracle drugs?”.

Many promises

Some of the preparations are intended to boost fat burning or curb appetite. Others expand in the stomach and fill you up in this way. There are many different starting points for how the supposed miracle cures are supposed to help with weight loss. But they have one thing in common: without a change in diet or regular exercise, they are all useless. Products from unsafe sources on the Internet can even be dangerous.

Tempting advertising messages are intended to encourage overweight people to buy. However, these say nothing about an actual effect. You should be particularly careful when manufacturers advertise that you can eat without restrictions and still lose weight, or when they advertise “money-back guarantees”: These are most likely dubious companies. Manufacturers who advertise their product with supposed doctors even violate EU law. Extremely striking “before and after” photos that document the sensational customer success should generally never be trusted. Image editing programs may have been used here, say AK experts.

Effective weight loss

Experts from the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor explain how to support permanent weight reduction.

Time: Being overweight does not happen overnight – and therefore does not disappear overnight. Long-term success can only be expected by slowly losing weight by a maximum of 0.5 to 1 kilo per week. The faster you lose weight, the higher the probability of a yo-yo effect!

diet change: Losing weight works without swallowing pills or drinking shakes. What is important is a slow and long-term change in the previous eating habits without prohibitions – towards a varied, less processed and high-fiber diet with a lower energy density.

Movement: What the body absorbs in energy when eating, it can work off again through movement. This creates a balanced energy balance. If you move more regularly, you will have additional leeway when eating.
