The annual Christmas campaign of Upper Austria. Landlerhilfe with thousands of packs for school children in the Theresiental this time was only the highlight of a year in which, since the Russian attack, 15 aid transports with more than 60 tons of donated goods for refugees have gone to the region around the old Upper Austrian town of Königsfeld (Ust-Tschorna). .
The arrival of the Austrians in the schools with a total of 21,000 packers was, as always, a holiday for the children in the remote region inhabited by some 100 descendants of woodworker families who had emigrated from the Salzkammergut, but otherwise were inhabited by Ukrainians.
100 volunteers in 42 company-provided vans distributed the gifts. “The gratitude is really touching,” says Landlerhilfe chairman Helmut Atzlinger. This year, of course, help from Upper Austria was already in demand in the spring. Königsfeld, which has 1,500 inhabitants, has taken in up to 800 Ukrainian refugees from the war zone, currently there are around 500. The families initially lived in the school building, but now they have found accommodation in private homes with people, most of whom are poor themselves.
Over the months, the Landlerhilfe transports have repeatedly helped out with food for their care, hygiene articles, suitable summer and now winter clothing as well as medical material. Especially the latter is urgently needed, because the medical care is very bad. Frequent power cuts, often lasting many hours, have been plaguing people for months, and there have been air raid warnings, but so far without any actual bombing.
The willingness to donate in schools, companies and private individuals was “gigantic”, as Atzlinger says. To finance the costs of further transport, Landlerhilfe is asking for donations to account AT41 3400 0000 0082 5000, BIC: RZOOAT2L. (Oh)
