Wind peaks of 137 km/h were measured on the Feuerkogel, while in the lowlands it blew strongest in Kremsmünster at 85 km/h. The wind dies down into the night. “Because we haven’t had a strong wind for a long time, it’s possible that rotten trees fall over or larger, rotten branches break off,” says Josef Haslhofer from GeoSphere Austria, to which ZAMG has belonged since January 1st. However, damage to buildings is unlikely at these wind speeds.
Fog and sunshine at the weekend
Haslhofer predicts “passable” weather for the long weekend – it will remain mild. Temperatures between eight and twelve degrees Celsius on Friday are too warm for this time of year. While Hochficht and Sternstein are stuck in the clouds, they will retreat over the course of the day, especially in the south. There will be more sunshine here than in the northern half of the country. The clouds are more stubborn, especially in the upper Mühlviertel, “here it can sometimes trickle out,” says the meteorologist.
Saturday “is a very friendly day overall”. After a clear night, it can be slightly frosty in the morning in Freistadt with temperatures between zero and minus two degrees Celsius. In the afternoon it will be mild again with temperatures between five and eleven degrees. In the northern Innviertel to the central area it will be cloudy at first, but the fog will lift in most parts of the country and in the course of the afternoon the sun will shine almost everywhere outside the fog zone.
Fog and high fog will become tougher on Sunday. There are also regions outside the fog zone where it will be foggy all day. High clouds will gather in the afternoon. Haslhofer therefore advises using the morning. The temperatures are still mild on Sunday with three to ten degrees Celsius.
Cool start to the week
It will cool down on Monday and Tuesday. “With two to six degrees on Tuesday, it’s cooler than now, but still not appropriate for the time of year,” says Haslhofer. At least it’s getting white again on the mountains, the snow line drops to about 1000 meters on these days. Tuesday will be “an uncomfortable day” with strong winds and rain showers.
Already on Wednesday “all the fun with cold and snow is over”. The frost line is moving far up into the mountains again, and Haslhofer expects temperatures of between five and ten degrees in the lowlands. “There is no sign of a cold winter period,” the meteorologist has to disappoint snow fans. “Those who don’t like snow and mud will be happy. Tourists see things differently, they would prefer it if there was snow.”
The trend towards mild winters that has become apparent in recent years will continue and intensify, says Haslhofer. “In between there will be another winter with more snow and cold, but that is becoming increasingly rare.” In January he wrote off the snow, says Haslhofer. “But February is still coming and in March it’s not impossible that it will snow.”
