Benedict XVI signed the waiver letter in 2006

Benedict XVI signed the waiver letter in 2006

This is reported by Benedikt’s secretary Georg Gänswein in a book that will be published on January 12th.

Gänswein explains that Benedict signed the waiver in 2006, a year after the beginning of his pontificate, according to the announcement by the Italian publisher Piemme, who will initially print the book in Italian under the title “Nient ‘altro che la veritá” (“Nothing but the truth”) and from which some excerpts have now been published. He recently reported that Benedict had already told him about his plans to resign in September 2012, several months before his resignation in February 2013.

Conflict with Pope Francis

Gänswein declares himself “shocked and speechless” at the decision taken by the incumbent Pope Francis in 2020 to dismiss him from the post of head of the prefecture of the Papal Household. “You will remain prefect, but starting tomorrow you will no longer return to your workplace,” according to Gänswein, Francis is said to have said. Benedict then ironically remarked: “I think Pope Francis no longer trusts me and wants you to be my guardian…”. Benedict had written to his successor asking him to reconsider his decision regarding Gänswein, which he did not do.

Benedict was for unconditional adherence to celibacy

Gänswein fell out of favor after a book by traditionalist Cardinal Robert Sarah from Guinea was published in mid-January 2020, which was printed as a joint work with Benedict. In it, both rejected the demands of the Amazon Synod and demanded a steadfast adherence to celibacy (obligation to remain celibate for clergy) – it looked as if Benedict wanted to put pressure on his successor shortly before a key decision in Francis’ pontificate. After severe criticism, Gänswein withdrew the cardinal’s permission to distribute the book with Benedict’s name.

Whether Francis actually allowed himself to be influenced cannot be clarified – in any case, he did not take up the call for relaxed celibacy. However, it became clear that Francis must have been very annoyed – shortly afterwards he gave Gänswein leave as prefect of the papal house and instructed him to take more care of Benedict.

According to the publisher’s announcement, in the forthcoming book, Gänswein reveals the truth about the maneuvers and attacks that were launched against the then Pope during the pontificate. Other topics are the case of the missing young people Emanuela Orlandi, the abuse scandal and the relationship between Pope Francis and his predecessor in the years since 2013, it said. Co-author is the Italian journalist and Vatican expert Saverio Gaeta.
