200,000 euros damage: social club falls victim to internet fraud

Fraudsters have been sending emails in the name of Erste Bank or Sparkasse for several days. The recipients are asked to make an appointment for a consultation so that the online banking system can be optimized. “In truth, however, it is a scam in which the perpetrators gain access to the account access data via a link that was sent,” explains Gerald Sakoparnig, Head of the fraud department in the State Criminal Police Office of Upper Austria, in an OÖN interview. The chairman of a Linz social association fell into this trap yesterday. A total of 200,000 euros was deducted from the victim, with 185.00 euros being debited from the club account and 15,000 euros from his private account. Particularly explosive: The victims of this scam must actively state their disposal number. “From this point on, the perpetrators take over the account,” says Sakoparnig.

Superficial access

In the specific case of the Linzer, the perpetrators reported late yesterday afternoon and pretended to be Sparkasse employees. They falsely pretended to cancel unauthorized payments for the victim. According to the State Criminal Police Office, the victim instead released a total of 40 payments, which the perpetrators actually debited. “The victim didn’t control the releases and probably had very superficial access,” says Sakoparnig. The State Criminal Police Office assumes that these fake e-mails will also come from other banks in the near future. “It is therefore important to emphasize again and again that financial institutions do not send such e-mails. It is important not to allow yourself to be put under pressure and to use common sense,” says Sakoparnig.
