Happy ending for the Black Wings

Happy ending for the Black Wings

The Steinbach Black Wings have found their way back to winning ways. The Linz ice hockey cracks won against the Italian newcomer Asiago 5:3 (2:0, 1:2, 2:1) and thus also decided the third duel of the season in their favor.

It was something of a liberation after two defeats in a row, the EHC shook off its jam. In 60 minutes, there were as many direct hits as in all five previous matches (2:1 aet against Salzburg, 1:2 aet in Vienna, 1:0 at KAC, 1:3 against Innsbruck, 0:4 in Salzburg). It goes without saying that the 3377 fans went home satisfied.

It was still hard work, although the goal shot ratio of 46:22 clearly spoke for the superior Linz team. But what initially looked like a runaway victory turned out to be quite a tight squeeze.

In the first third, Wings top scorer Michael Haga (9th) and Emilio Romig (17th) shot out a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead.

But Asiago didn’t throw in the towel even after Graham Knott’s 3-1 (25th minute) – just 45 seconds after the goal. After 43:17 minutes it was suddenly 3:3, any exit was possible.

But the Upper Austrians had the better end. Brodi Stuart made it 4:3 after 54:15 minutes, Knott made everything clear with an empty net goal 57 seconds before the final siren.

So did Canadian signing Matt Murphy, who enjoyed the atmospheric setting on his home debut and scored his first point in a Black Wings shirt (it was an assist at 3-1).

Coach Philipp Lukas had demanded a reaction after what he saw as a hugely disappointing 0:4 in Salzburg on Wednesday, and the team followed their words with deeds. It should continue in this tone on Sunday (4.30 p.m., live ticker on nachrichten.at) in the “Bunker” in Graz.

If the law of the series holds, then the people of Linz should have the upper hand. Because in the previous three matches, the away team always had the upper hand.
