Feronia is an ancient Italic goddess and is referred to as “the flower-lover”. Her name stands for spring and earth. That is why she is the namesake of the sustainability prize of the OÖNachrichten, which is being awarded for the first time this year with the partners Oberbank and the state of Upper Austria. Companies, associations and cultural initiatives based in Upper Austria can apply for the Feronia Prize in four categories (see box).
The extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who was awarded the TÜV Rheinland Foundation’s sustainability prize for his life’s work in 2021, will give a speech at the award ceremony on March 16, 2023 in the Oberbank Donau-Forum. The winner receives EUR 5,000 in prize money per category as well as media volume on the OÖ Nachrichten worth EUR 9,000.

“Don’t hand over a planet that’s getting warmer”
The jury is made up of representatives of the organizers and independent jurors: Meteorologist Helga Kromp-Kolb, Palfinger boss Andreas Klauser, Günther Reifer (founder of the Terra Institute), Thomas Gaber (KPMG), Heidrun Kopp (Sustainable Finance Management, FH Vienna), Katharina Muner-Sammer (Austrian Society for Environment & Technology), Jasmin Berghammer (Caritas), Gabriela Straka (respACT state coordinator Upper Austria and board member Brau Union).
- Applications are possible from January 14th up to and including February 4th at nachrichten.at/feronia.
