Giant slalom: Canadian Grenier won sensationally

Grenier had never climbed the podium in the World Cup before, but had shown her potential on the Semmering with the best time in the second run of the second race. On the Podkoren she brought the fastest time to the finish in both runs and let the Canadian Ski Association celebrate a victory in a women’s giant slalom for the first time since Epiphany in Pfronten in 1974.

Sestriere winner Bassino underscores her consistency with second place and made it onto the RTL podium for the seventh time in a row. US star Mikaela Shiffrin, on the other hand, had to settle for sixth place. The leader in the overall World Cup had set out for her 82nd World Cup victory, which would have equaled the record set by her compatriot Lindsey Vonn, but this time she was unable to compete for victory and even fell back by one place in the second round. The two-time winner from Semmering has the next chance to reach the historic mark on Sunday (9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m./live ORF 1) in the second giant slalom in Slovenia.

Austrians remain in crisis

The Austrians once again did not manage to get the momentum out of the crisis in their problem discipline and missed the top ten places for the third time in the fifth giant slalom of the season. The best ÖSV runner was Gritsch, who achieved her best RTL result of the season with twelfth place. “I’m thinking for myself, step by step. I think there were positive things again today. For me it’s just really going through the whole thing from top to bottom, and do it twice. I hope that for me personally tomorrow the next step,” said the 25-year-old in an ORF interview.

Ricarda Haaser made up seven places with a good second run and was classified 14th, 2.18 seconds behind. “It was definitely a better run, I felt much better from skiing had a line problem, it started in the upper part, that I didn’t get directly behind the goal. I didn’t keep him on the train, that was a bit too direct at times,” said Haaser and announced for Sunday : “Ride away like you did in the second round, with the attack.”

Katharina Liensberger, the best Austrian after the first run (16th), messed up the second run and only came in 21st, 2.81 seconds behind. Stephanie Brunner was 18th, 22-year-old Nina Astner was 26th and scored points for the first time in the World Cup in her career.
