The rescue ship “Ocean Viking” has rescued 37 people who were in an overcrowded inflatable boat in international waters off Libya. According to the aid organization SOS Mediterranee, which operates the rescue ship, the rescued shipwrecked suffer from fuel burns. Italy gave the ship permission to land in the port of Ancona. The landing is scheduled for January 11, the Italian authorities said.
The “Geo Barents” is also scheduled to land in the Adriatic port of Ancona. The ship, operated by the aid organization Doctors Without Borders, had rescued 73 people in the past few days.
The island of Lampedusa, however, continues to be confronted with strong migration movements. Of the 1,320 migrants currently in the hotspot, 450 of them will leave Lampedusa on Saturday afternoon, authorities said. The prefecture of the Sicilian city of Agrigento, in consultation with the Ministry of the Interior in Rome, ordered the migrants to be relocated to Sicily in order to relieve the refugee facility in Lampedusa. The 450 people are taken by ship to Porto Empedocle in Sicily.
Under the new Italian government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, installed in October, Italy has taken a tough stance on NGOs rescuing migrants in distress in the Mediterranean. The aid organizations are accused of supporting smuggling. According to the Interior Ministry in Rome, 105,149 people landed on the Italian coasts in 2022 as a whole, 56 percent more than the 67,477 in the previous year. In 2020 there were 33,687 people.
