Iran executed two protesters and the US condemned: They must be held accountable

Since the start of the wave of protests, the Iranian court sentenced to death fourteen people who participated in the demonstrations, according to an account by the AFP news agency. For the moment, and counting the cases of Karami (22 years old) and Hosseini (39), four hangings have been carried out, while two await confirmation of the sentence by the Supreme Court. According to the UN, to thearound 14,000 people have been arrested since last Septemberamong whom are athletes, activists, journalists and artists.

USA condemned these executions “in the strongest terms” and called it “mock trials”: “These executions are a key component of the regime’s effort to suppress protests. We continue to work with allies to seek accountability for Iran’s brutal crackdown“said State Department spokesman Ned Price on his Twitter account.

For her part, the European Union was “dismayed” and called “once again on the Iranian authorities to immediately end the highly condemnable practice of pronouncing and carrying out death sentences against protesters”. Through a statement signed by Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for the head of community diplomacy, she described it as “a definitive punishment that makes possible judicial errors irreversible.”
