Shiffrin drew level with Vonn in wins

Austria’s top runners continue to drive completely off track, Julia Scheib was the best of the ÖSV team in 13th place.

Shiffrin triumphed in Slovenia with two best times, 0.77 seconds ahead of Italy’s Federica Brignone and 0.97 ahead of Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami. “That was maybe my best skiing today, I hope I can repeat that,” said Shiffrin after the extremely emotional celebration. “Maybe now we can finally stop talking about the record.” Now only Ingemar Stenmark is ahead of her in the mixed ranking with 86 wins.

She was incredibly nervous at the start before the second round and thought she would faint. “I don’t know why I was so emotional. I didn’t think about the 82 wins. I just wanted to ski well, I was so nervous, I felt like I was going to faint.” She imagined the run 100 times, mentally eliminated 99 times.

Liensberger missed qualification

While six Austrians made it through to the second round on Saturday, only a trio made it on Sunday. Scheib (from 23 to 13/+2.60), Stephanie Brunner (from 25 to 14/+2.73) and Franziska Gritsch (from 22 to 15/+2.86) still achieved good ranking improvements.

Scheib, who made her comeback at Semming after an injury break of almost two years, could be satisfied with the performance and the best career result. “The middle part was a bit too wrong. It was definitely a good race for me. Of course you want to be further up the field. But I have to see where I come from, where I was last year,” said the 24-year-old.

The knee has developed very well in the past few weeks, but she misses the racing practice. It was still very difficult mentally at Semmering, but in Kranjska Gora she was able to ignore thoughts of her knee.

Gritsch, the best Austrian on Saturday in twelfth place, took “a lot of positive things” with him. “Sections work quite well,” she said, although she was a little upset about the second round, maybe she wanted too much. Brunner said, “not much is missing, I just have to be patient”.

However, Katharina Liensberger (+2.52), Katharina Truppe (+3.49) and Ramona Siebenhofer (+3.81), who came third at the World Championships, missed out on qualifying, Ricarda Haaser was eliminated. Liensberger confirmed that skiing is still fun. “Skiing stays the same. I can only keep working. The next steps are the most important. When you see that the gap is enormous, you have to compare and see what the best are doing.”

“Confused and Desperate”

However, Katharina Liensberger (+2.52), Katharina Truppe (+3.49) and Ramona Siebenhofer (+3.81), who came third at the World Championships, missed out on qualifying, Ricarda Haaser was eliminated. In the ORF TV interview, Liensberger confirmed that the fun of skiing was still there, believing that the final qualification would be over. “Skiing stays the same. I can only keep working. The next steps are the most important. When you see that the gap is enormous, you have to compare and see what the best are doing.”

Troupe saw nothing to sugarcoat. “I’m at a loss and desperate myself. At the Semmering I was still sixth after the first round. The worm is so deep, I don’t know what wormer I have to take to make it better.” As a team, you try to motivate yourself and stick together. “We have to accept it now and see that we can find a solution.”
