Frankenburg: Demonstration without incident in front of asylum accommodation

As reported, the Ministry of the Interior rented an empty industrial hall (Blue Sky) in the Hausruck community in 2015 to look after arriving asylum seekers. 300 men now live in the hall. The demonstrators say that is far too much for the 5,000-inhabitant town and vehemently demanded a reduction to below 100. A scuffle among refugees had triggered excitement in the fall. The organizers of the demonstration also argue that the hall is not structurally and hygienically designed for so many people and also want to take legal action against the high number of people in the quarter.

At the center of the criticism is VP Mayor Norbert Weber, who looks on and does nothing. Among the demonstrators who had marched up near the initial reception center were SP Deputy Mayor Hubert Peiskammer and some SP mandaters. The police operations management from the Vöcklabruck district command spoke of a quiet event without incident.

Mayor Norbert Weber agrees with the demonstrators on one point: namely that the number of asylum seekers in the community is far too high. “I would like to come to a tolerable level of around 100 people with negotiations,” says the mayor in an interview with OÖN. He has a landmark appointment with the Managing Director of the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU), Andreas Achrainer, on Thursday this week. “There we will explore ways of reducing the number of men seeking asylum.” The mayor wants to have a concrete schedule and concrete measures on the table by the end of February at the latest as to how Frankenburg can be relieved. As a measure, the municipality was assured by the Ministry of the Interior that a police station would be set up in town as soon as possible.
