At around 12.30 p.m., the 47-year-old wanted to descend from the Traunstein summit via the Mairalm descent into the valley when a wet wooden bridge that led over the Lainaubach stream became his undoing at the end of the climb. When crossing the climber slipped and fell about ten feet, feet first, into the dried-up creek bed.
Subsequent climbers immediately provided first aid. Because there was no mobile phone reception on site, one of them ran out of the valley and called the emergency services.
After first aid by the doctor from the mountain rescue service, the injured person was carried out of the creek bed to the forest road. An ambulance was waiting for him there, which took him to the landing site of the “Martin 3” emergency helicopter at the Mairalm. From there he was then flown to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Bad Ischl.
