A large number of children and adolescents are currently being cared for in the Kepler University Hospital, unfortunately some with dangerous secondary diseases. In particularly severe cases, intensive medical care is required. “All of these children were completely healthy beforehand, so they didn’t suffer from any previous illnesses,” say the two experts Ariane Biebl from the University Clinic for Pediatrics and Gudrun Huber from the University Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, describing the current situation.
Two deaths
Two deaths in children in connection with the real flu (influenza) in Upper Austria, another child whose life is in acute danger due to heart muscle inflammation and small children who suffered from encephalitis or Guillain Barre Syndrome (acute ascending paralysis) as a result of the flu. Suffer. The massive effects of the wave of influenza, which is currently spilling over Upper Austria, are affecting the attending physicians at the Kepler University Hospital. Mainly because a vaccination would protect against such severe courses.
“In view of the dangerous consequences of influenza, we would like to appeal to all parents to have their children vaccinated against influenza. This vaccination is completely painless because it is administered as a nasal spray, it is free and protects against severe courses,” the two doctors appeal.
“However, we would also like to point out that high fevers in children are usually not a cause for concern as long as the children react well to their surroundings and eat and drink enough. However, if the children become apathetic and drink and eat insufficiently, the family doctor should be consulted. If symptoms persist, we recommend visiting a pediatrician.”
