Wirtschaftsbund wants free electricity days for companies

The year 2023 will probably be a year of stagnation, said Doris Hummer, chairwoman of the Upper Austrian Economic Association, at a press conference on Monday, with reference to forecasts by the economic research institutes Wifo and IHS. For Upper Austria, with its high proportion of industry and exports, the fact that there are signs of a recession of around minus two percent in industry and that the most important trading partners such as Germany also have meager growth prospects is aggravating.

The fact that the energy cost subsidy 2 was set up at the federal level at the end of last year is a success and helps, said Hummer. But she also expects support from the state and energy suppliers in Upper Austria when it comes to high energy costs. “We demand free electricity days for commercial tariff customers.” There is already such a model in Salzburg. The exact design depending on the annual electricity consumption is open, but one is already in intensive talks. All companies should benefit, possibly smaller ones with free days and larger ones with free quotas.

Entrepreneurs generally confident

An IMAS survey presented by Paul Eiselsberg shows that 21 percent of Upper Austrian entrepreneurs are worried about the new year, while 32 percent are skeptical. 43 percent are looking to the year 2023 with confidence. It will be difficult and very challenging, said Hummer: “At the same time, the entrepreneurs are basically confident, that’s in their DNA and speaks for entrepreneurship. They believe in the problem-solving ability of economic policy and in themselves even.” According to Eiselsberg, only 25 percent of the general population are looking to the new year with confidence. And beyond the next year, 76 percent of Upper Austrian entrepreneurs say that one should remain optimistic. According to the survey (representative of 501 entrepreneurs surveyed), the greatest obstacles for companies are currently the lack of workers, inflation and energy costs.

The Economic Association is in favor of tax relief for full-time work and overtime. According to Hummer, there should also be tax incentives for working pensioners. The reform of the Red-White-Red Card is having an effect. In a next step, adult apprentices from abroad should be able to do training in shortage occupations.

According to Hummer, the investment premium is particularly important from an Upper Austrian perspective. there should be a new edition if the economy in 2023 does not develop better than expected. In addition, the Wirtschaftsbund proposes the evaluation of the “Luxembourg model”, which would bring home builders a sales tax refund and thus 20 percent lower costs.
