A snowboarder is pulled up the mountain by a tow lift. He loses his footing, then the bar, and slides down the steep lift route. The 18-year-old tears down numerous other winter sports enthusiasts. An observer filmed the wild scenes that took place in St. Georgen am Kreischberg on the morning of January 4th and posted the video online. The result was an avalanche of clicks.
The 28-second clip now has millions of views. The video shared by the “ski_shred” Instagram page alone received almost 150,000 “likes”. The spectacular accident was put online with the title “Welcome to snowboard bowling”. Those involved, however, had nothing to smile about. On the contrary: the skiing day ended in hospital for four injured people, and the rescue helicopter was also deployed.
Investigated after a few hours
According to the Styrian police, the snowboarder who got the ball rolling is an 18-year-old from Hungary. He left the scene of the accident without providing first aid. A few hours later, the cause of the accident was found.
The young man had problems using the lift, after which the bar slipped out of his legs. According to the police report, he tried to hold the hanger with both hands and get it between his legs again. “Shortly before the crest, on the steepest part of the tow lift, he could no longer hold the bar, fell to the ground and slid down the steep hill,” it continues. The alpine service of the Murau district police command is investigating.
