The Director of Curatorship of the Presidential Palaces, Rogério Carvalho, explained the importance of the outrage: “The value of what is destroyed is incalculable due to the history it contains. The collection is a reflection of all the presidents who represented the Brazilian people during this long period beginning with JK (Juscelino Kubitschek). That is its historical value.”

Brazil: what works the Bolsonaristas destroyed

  • Mulatas, by Emiliano Di Cavalcanti: The painting was perforated at least 7 times and the government appraised it at US$1.5 million.
  • Flag of Brazil, by Jorge Eduardo: located in the presidential palace, the work was drenched with water by protesters.
  • O Pied Piper, by Bruno Giorgi: It is a bronze sculpture with a value of US$48,000. It was totally destroyed and its pieces were scattered on the floor.
  • Wooden sculptures by Frans Krajcberg: The artwork is valued at $47,000. Made up of pieces of wood, the Bolsonaristas broke them and threw them away.

  • Kubitscheck work table: the piece of furniture created by former president Juscelino Kubitscheck (1955-1960) was used as a barricade by the protesters.
  • Showcase table by Sérgio Rodrigues: A glass window containing information about the current president was smashed by protesters.
  • Balthazar Martinot Clock: The clock, designed by Balthazar Martinot (1636-1714), was a gift from France to King João IV, who ruled Brazil and Portugal.

Marches in defense of democracy in Brazil

After the coup attempt carried out by Bolsonarista protesters this Sunday afternoon, civil society, social organizations, popular movements and political parties called to demonstrate in the streets of all of Brazil in defense of democracy. Sao Paulo and Brasilia concentrated a large part of the mobilizations that began at noon and ended late at night.

In São Paulo, the events began at noon, in Largo San Francisco, in front of the USP Law School, with the call of the USP Collective under the slogan “In Defense of Democracy” in the face of “the serious coup events that occurred in Brasilia and other cities in the country.

“People on the street will defend democracy and their social rights”reported the organization, according to the Brasil de Fato website.
