The spectacular church building in the Spanish Mediterranean metropolis was chosen for its originality, location, history and artistic value. In 2022, it was also the most frequently mentioned building on TripAdvisor with 164,200 reviews.
In the survey of around 460 million users of the digital platform in 130 countries worldwide, the architecturally unique basilica by Antonio Gaudí beat buildings such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (2nd place), Istanbul’s Blue Mosque (7th place), the Taj Mahal in India (8th place) as well as Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace (10th place) and the Budapest Parliament building (12th place).

Sagrada Familia not finished yet
Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia already has several other records. According to the Guinness Book, it is the tallest modernist church building in the world at 138 meters, and the church will grow to 172.5 meters by the time of its final completion in 2026. The basilica is also the world’s most visited modernist church building and certainly the longest construction site in the world. Catalonia’s star architect Antonio Gaudí began building the still unfinished church in 1882.
