Several people buried – avalanche ended lightly

All involved were rescued alive. One person was completely buried, the rest only partially got under the snow masses. According to the police to the APA in the evening, three people were injured, one of whom had to be flown to the hospital by helicopter.

According to the police, the victims were soldiers of the German Bundeswehr. They were busy building snow shelters when the slab avalanche, which was around 30 meters wide and ten meters long, broke off at an altitude of 3,150 meters. The injured were people aged 21 and 26. According to an online report in the Kronen Zeitung, 19 soldiers took part in the exercise. Three helicopters, alpine police, piste rescue and mountain rescue were deployed.

After the mild Christmas weather, Tyrol showed its wintry side again for the first time on Tuesday with snowfall down into the valley. As reported by the avalanche warning service, the avalanche danger in some parts of Tyrol rose to level 3 on the five-part scale and was thus described as “considerable”. One reason for this is fresh snow in combination with stormy winds.
