At the age of 82, Constantine II, the last king of Greece, died

The last king of Greece had presented health problems and had been admitted to the Ygeia private hospital in Athens last week because of respiratory problems. Days ago, his entire family accompanied him at the hospital, including Sofía, who had traveled from Spain to share the last moments of her life.

How was the last reign of Greece

Constantine II acceded to the throne at 23 years in 1964 in one of the most eventful periods of contemporary Greek history. His brief reign was marked by the political instability and the Dictatorship of the Colonels.

The oath of fidelity that Constantine, as king and head of state, took to the military junta provoked great popular resentment. In December of that year he failed in his attempt to overthrow the junta with a military counter-coup, and he and his family went into exile.

In June 1973, the military government removed Constantine II from his role as king. Later, when democracy was restored, this was confirmed by a national referendum in 1974, in which the option of the republic obtained close to 70% of the votes.

After his dismissal, he left Greece and lived 40 years in London in a mansion in Hampstead, before returning in 2013. Married to Ana Mariasister of Margrethe II, queen of Denmark, had five children.
