At around 6 p.m. the man left the house where he had lived with his wife. Because he did not return by 8:30 p.m., his wife called the police. A large-scale search operation followed. First, the fire brigade, rescue dogs and police helicopters arrived, then the search was expanded with 70 members of the Altmünster, Eben-Nachdemsee, Neukirchen, Traunkirchen and Reindlmühl fire brigades as well as eight dog handlers from the rescue dog brigade and the Red Cross. Three drones were also used in the search, police said. Around four in the morning, the relatives and the emergency services had sad certainty. The missing 83-year-old was found dead in a pond just 200 meters from his home.
