Kyiv denies taking Soledar by Wagner

“Soledar was, is and always will be Ukrainian,” the Ukrainian army said on the online service Telegram on Wednesday. She also dismissed reports by Russian media that the founder of the mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was in the Soledar salt mines. That is “not true”.

The Wagner group had previously said it had “taken control of the entire Soledar area.” At the same time, however, Prigozhin spoke of ongoing fighting in the city center. The information could not initially be independently verified.

Soledar is located in the Donetsk region claimed by Moscow and near the city of Bakhmut, which has been heavily contested for months. Both sides had recently reported particularly fierce battles around Soledar.

Russia’s state-run news agency RIA Novosti on Wednesday published a photo of the Wagner founder with armed militants, saying it was taken in the Soledar salt mines. Prigozhin also published a photo of himself in military uniform surrounded by Wagner fighters. The Ukrainian military said the photos were not taken in Soledar.

“Wagner units have taken the entire territory of Soledar under their control,” Prigozhin said late Tuesday evening, according to Russian news agencies. In the center of the city, a pocket has formed in which fighting is taking place. “The number of prisoners will be announced tomorrow,” Prigozhin added Tuesday, but gave no details. Prigozhin’s statement that fighting continued in the center indicated that Soledar has not fallen fully under Russian control.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the military command made no mention of alleged Russian control over Soledar Tuesday night. Zelenskyj said in his evening speech that Bakhmut and Soledar would continue to be defended. He reiterated his call for more Western weapons and said Russia was joining forces to intensify its campaign. He did not give details.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry tweeted late Tuesday: “Even after colossal losses, Russia is still trying madly to conquer Soledar – home of Europe’s largest salt mine.” Deputy Secretary of Defense Hanna Maliar said the battle for Soledar was still raging. The enemy ignores the heavy casualties of their units and continues to charge. “The approaches to our positions are littered with the corpses of enemy combatants. Our soldiers bravely hold the position.”
