Asfinag’s gritter vehicles are “lit up like a Christmas tree,” says Alexander Högl, Regional Operations Manager. Nevertheless, a driver in early traffic on the A1 towards Vienna crashed head-on into a gritting vehicle near Allhaming shortly after six o’clock. Two subsequent drivers were no longer able to brake in time and were also involved in the accident. One of the drivers was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by the fire department. According to Högl, the driver of the gritting vehicle suffered whiplash and bruises and was taken to the hospital.
“The third axle of the gritter was torn out in the accident,” says Högl. It can be assumed that a total loss was caused. The other vehicles involved were also badly damaged. Despite the conspicuous lighting, rear-end collisions are more common, says Högl. This is due to the inattention and fatigue of drivers. The A1 in the direction of Vienna had to be closed for the duration of the clean-up work, with diversions taking place via the A8 and the A25.
