Five days before the start of the Australian Open, tennis star Novak Djokovic prematurely ended his training game in Melbourne against Russian Daniil Medvedev. “I felt it pull a bit, I didn’t want to risk anything worse,” the Serb told the Australian news portal “9News” about the complaints in his left leg, which he had previously also had problems against Medvedev in the semifinals of the ATP tournament in Adelaide had.
The training session with Medvedev at Melbourne Park, which was actually scheduled for 75 minutes, ended after 36 minutes. “I apologized to him, he understood,” reported Djokovic.
“Traces are still there”
The 35-year-old also spoke again about the entry fuss last year when he was not allowed to take part in the Australian Open because of his refusal to vaccinate. “Suddenly I was the villain of the whole world,” said the 21-time Grand Slam tournament winner. The waves have since calmed down, but “the traces are still there”. Djokovic complained about a distorted representation of things in the media: “A lot of people still have a wrong idea of what happened.”
Tournament boss Craig Tiley meanwhile warned fans not to hostile Djokovic in any way at the Australian Open, which begins on Monday. “If you disturb someone else’s joy – boom, then you’re out,” Tiley told the Herald Sun newspaper: “You can stay away or we’ll throw you out.”
