Massive marches in Bolivia to demand the freedom of Camacho

Tuesday’s march was carried out under the qualification of “dictatorship” for the government of leftist President Luis Arce. “It’s for democracy”said Rómulo Calvo, president of the Santa Cruz Civic Committee, a powerful civil-business conglomerate that called for the demonstrations.

Despite the fact that the Bolivian government detained Camacho for his role in the coup against former President Evo Morales at the end of 2019, the opposition and protesters say that it is an illegal imprisonment.

“We are already like Venezuela and Nicaragua, under repression and abuse of power”declared Calvo in the demonstration held in Santa Cruz, at the same time that he pointed to Arce as a political dolphin of ex-president Morales.

According to estimates, 2,000 opponents marched from southern Bolivia to La Paz. However, their passage was limited due to the attack of other groups that threw stones, sticks and firecrackers.

Bolivia: arrest and protests

Luis Fernando Camacho was arrested on Wednesday, December 28, in the midst of an extensive strike that the Santa Cruz region is carrying out against the government of Luis Arce. The leader is being investigated for his participation in the coup that overthrew Evo Morales in 2019 and forced him into exile in Mexico and Argentina.

At the time, the main civil organizations in Santa Cruz, a prosperous agricultural region in eastern Bolivia, announced a 24-hour work stoppage and road blockade on Thursday.

The vice president of the Committee for Santa Cruz, Fernando Larach He detailed the reasons in a press conference: “We are here to formally inaugurate this 24-hour departmental civic strike. A strike that is in protest of the arbitrariness and the kidnapping committed against the governor of Santa Cruz.”

These measures were a principle of conflict of a new episode of the crisis that began in 2019 with the resignation of then-president Evo Morales and they have as a background the desire for autonomy of the territory with respect to the national government, based in western La Paz.
