Computer glitch unleashed havoc on US air travel

How this came about was initially unknown. According to the White House, there are currently no signs of a cyber attack. Such a flight ban had not existed in the USA since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

A system was affected that provides pilots and other flight personnel with important safety information and notifications of disruptions to flight operations. News of the glitch first emerged Wednesday morning as airline passengers across the country were already waiting at check-in counters. Some also got the ban on taking off when they were already on the plane.

According to the Flightaware website, by 10:15 a.m. local time in Washington (4:15 p.m. CET), almost 5,800 flights were delayed and more than 950 were canceled. Although the ban on domestic flights was lifted shortly before 9 a.m., the airlines said the delays would continue throughout the day, news channel CNN reported.

According to the FAA, the reason for the breakdown was not yet known on Wednesday morning. “We continue to investigate the cause of the problem,” the FAA said on Twitter. US President Joe Biden said he is in contact with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and will be updated on the situation. He wrote that he had ordered an investigation into the failure.

AUA flights not affected

Lufthansa said the disruption will not affect flights to and from the United States. The US flights of the AUA were not affected, it was said on request.

After the breakdown, questions were raised about how well US air traffic is prepared for incidents. It was only over Christmas that more than 16,000 flights on the Southwest airline were canceled after a massive cold snap. According to analysts, this was not only due to the weather, but above all to an outdated computer system, as reported by the radio station NPR. According to the airline, the failures could have caused financial damage of up to 825 million US dollars (around 770 million euros). Information about the current incident is not yet available.
