Thousands of planes were not allowed to take off in the United States on Wednesday morning (local time) after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a ban on domestic flights. The reason was a computer glitch at the FAA that had occurred the night before. It was initially unclear how this came about. The White House said there are currently no signs of a cyber attack. Such a flight ban had not existed in the USA since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
A system was affected that provides pilots and other flight personnel with important safety information and notifications of disruptions to flight operations. News of the glitch first emerged Wednesday morning as airline passengers across the country were already waiting at check-in counters. Some caught the grounding when they were on the plane.
According to the Flightaware website, 5,800 flights were delayed by mid-morning, and more than 950 were completely canceled. Although the ban on domestic flights was lifted shortly before 9 a.m., the delays continued throughout the day.
The reason for the breakdown was initially unknown. “We continue to investigate the cause of the problem,” the FAA said on Twitter. US President Joe Biden said he is in contact with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and will be updated on the situation. He wrote that he had ordered an investigation into the failure.
